As a speaker, I often find myself seeking those great stories of people who do amazing things.
Of course, we often immediatly go to those "greats" - those outstanding heroes or people of history who through their very public actions and lives are easy to find. People like Gandhi, JF & Robert Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Richard Branson, Kingsford-Smith, William Wilberforce .... and the list goes on. These are what I call the headline heroes. They ispire us but not necessarily lead us to taking action.
More often than not it is someone, a seemingly insignificant person in the scheme of world events, who inspires us, not as a headline but as a person who inspires us to actually act and make our own dreams a reality.
It might be a mum, a dad, a friend, a collegue, a neighbor or just someone we hear about.
Like Dack Axselle, who as a 10 year old in 1984 completed the Richmond Virginia Newspaper Marathon in 11 hours and 10 minutes. He almost quit at the 39km mark and despite his father suggesting he stop Dack said he'd come too far to quit. Of the 831 competitors who started the race, over 400 quit. At the finish line over 1000 people waited for Dack to cross the line, long after the officials had packed up and left. After the race, the local Police Chief made the comment, "Who said there are no more heroes?"
You see Dack has Spina Bifida and he completed the whole distance on his hands.
I don't know who won that race - it may have been in the headline somewhere, but the story they wrote about was one of inspiration - of an unknown, seemingly insignificant 10 year old who defied the odds. Who makes me think, if he can do that, what can I do?
And so it is in life.
So, who inspires you?
Go on; make your dreams a reality.
Regards
Colin
