For my 50th birthday my children surprised me with the most brilliant gift.
After checking that I had an insurance policy (just joking)
the drove me to a local, regional airport. Being one who loves aircraft and
flying, I thought they were taking me to the aircraft museum that is based
there.
No, we drove straight past that and on towards a small
building that had a picture on the side of the building of someone jumping out
of an aircraft. For years I had wanted to skydive, parachuting. My birthday
gift was to make that dream a reality.
After going through the instructions on how to behave during
the jump, I climbed into a small aircraft and was tethered to my jump partner.
As we climbed to the jump height my instructor asked – are you excited or
nervous? Strangely, I had to respond, neither. In my mind I was simply looking
at it as I was going to jump out of an aircraft. My dream was coming true.
Well the moment came – we climbed to the edge and jumped.
Well, not so much as a jump as a tumble.
After a couple or aeronautical 360’s we straightened out
into level fall (I am reluctant to say flight) – and below was the earth….. and
nothing else! Wow! This was amazing.
A few moments on from free flight, the parachute was
deployed and I felt as if we had come to a dead stop in mid-air. We now started
a slow manoeuvring towards landing next to where we had taken off.
One more surprise first though – my instructor had me pull
slightly on the cords controlling the chute above our heads. In only a few
seconds we spiralled several hundred feet, before he had me release the cords.
All too quickly, we touched down.
That’s when my excitement and exhilaration kicked in! I had
just jumped out of a perfectly serviceable aircraft and landed safely on the
terra ferma. After so many years of wish and hoping, my dream was made a
reality.
And I wondered, why had it taken me so long? This had been a
brilliant experience. I would do it again tomorrow – well soon again anyway!
Why had I let fear get in the way of the brilliant and amazing experience that
was my dream?
And isn’t that what so many people do with their dreams?
They let fear, anxiety, other people, “life”, whatever…. get in the way of a
dream.
Every dream is given to us for a reason – wee the ones meant
to make them happen. No-one else can make your dreams a reality. That’s their
dream. Only you can give life to your ones.
It doesn’t matter if your 15, 50 or 85 go experience the
reality of your dreams. It’s never too late. It’s never too long ago. Not while
we’re alive anyway.
Now, what about my pilots licence?
