And intrinsically tied to these messages, like Velcro strips
clinging to each other, was the theme that being successful meant being
something – a “somebody”. I heard, “Here is what
will make you a success” (the things), and “Here is how you get it” (goal-setting).
A while back I attended a seminar with over 16,000 other
people. The atmosphere was electric. But, after two days, I came away from that
seminar, and began to wonder; why is it that of the 16,000 people who attended
– 16,000 people who all had ambitions, desires and dreams, – why is it that
only a handful, maybe a couple of hundred at most, would go on to achieve the
riches and the trappings of “success” that we were told defined them as
a success (having “made” it)?
Woven like a thread through those seminars, and many more
like them, was the underlying message that having goals was important to
succeed and, like kicking a goal in a football game, there is either success or
failure, you either win or you lose.
So, why wouldn’t
everyone “make it”? After all they were told they could! Why wouldn’t more
people achieve their goals if goal-setting was as simple as those people
running the seminars said it was? After all, everyone who attended heard the
same message and all had a relatively similar chance of succeeding.
I believe
there is a direct relationship between the way
the message is delivered and the reasons why many people don’t achieve their
goals:
1) Many
fail to achieve the goals they set because many of them set goals that are
based – not on what they really want,
but on what they are led to believe makes a person successful; and
2) The
prospect of failing or losing – the only options offered in so many of these seminars
on success – stopped them from ever attempting to set goals.
I’ll look at this more in depth in the next few posts.
Just remember this. What makes you a success is not what
other people say is success. It is not pursuing the things others say you will
be judged by as to how successful you are. What makes you successful is when
you achieve the things YOU want. When you strive to chase the life, the
lifestyle and the aspects of life that YOU say is important to you and those
you love and care about.
That means that you don’t have to have the best according to
others – just the best according to you. Nothing else matters.
And this nonsense about being a loser? As I said a few posts
ago, forget that! After all, you know you are an achiever.
